Tre Anthony Garrett, 33, of Germantown, was sentenced this week in Frederick County Circuit Court to 30 years in prison, with all but 15 years suspended, for first-degree child abuse and neglect of a minor, prosecutors announced.

The case began on Jan. 5, 2024, when Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Frederick Health Hospital for a report of a severely injured child suffering from multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds.

Medical staff determined the injuries were “highly suspicious” for non-accidental trauma. The toddler was later flown to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, for further treatment.

Detectives learned the child’s mother had left him in Garrett’s care while she ran errands. When she returned, she saw Garrett walking with the child, who was dressed inappropriately for the cold weather.

When she tried to take her son, Garrett refused. She then called 911.

Officers found Garrett later that night in response to a separate 911 call, but he did not have the child with him, authorities said.

It wasn’t until approximately ten hours later that the boy was brought to the hospital by Garrett’s mother.

Through a joint investigation between detectives and medical personnel, authorities determined the child’s injuries happened while he was in Garrett’s care.

During sentencing, Judge Joanmarie Raymond Brubaker told Garrett, “You must get a handle on your drug issues to establish a healthy relationship with your son.”

Following his release, Garrett will serve five years of supervised probation. He is barred from having any contact with his son and cannot have unsupervised contact with any minor child.
